DUATHLON/TRIATHLON WELL-REPRESENTED

Klerksdorp Record, Orkney – After obtaining permission from the Department of Sport, Art and Culture via the National Federation, North West Triathlon started hosting Triathlon/Duathlon leagues at “The Willows” outside Orkney. The swim leg was in the Vaal River, followed by a road cycle, and run.

Triathlon is a continuous swim-cycle-run event. For the non-swimmers it included a duathlon which is a continuous run-cycle-run event. Athletes aged between 6 and 69 participated over various distances.

Following NW Triathlon championships in January, 13 athletes went to represent NW in the SA Triathlon Championships.

Jacolien Swart from Schweizer Reneke placed second in her age group in the sprint race and Dylan Kruger from Orkney placed first in his age group in the sprint race as well as in the standard Olympic distance race. Four athletes from NW have been selected to represent SA at the Triathlon World Championships.

In March, the NW Duathlon championships took place. Eighteen athletes will be representing NW at the SA Duathlon Championships in Nelson Mandela Bay on 26 June.

They are Pieter Burger, Andre du Toit, Sydney Gregan, Pieter Henning, Mariette Hitge, Dylan Kruger, Cornelius Leijnaar, Wilhelm Steyn, Dr Johan Visser, Jacques Human, Simeon Joubert, Dawie Janse van Rensburg, Rico Leijnaar, Lynn van Tonder, Oliver Delport, Isak Hitge, Tihard Strydom and Andre Visser.
